If you are reading this then you must be looking for quiet dog breeds that you can live with in an apartment setting. You can teach any dog the “Quiet” command but if it is in their nature to bark they will do so when you are not home. Quiet dog breeds can come in all sizes small, medium to extra large. Here I will introduce you to many of these breeds along with their pictures so that you can make a decision on picking out your perfect and quiet apartment dog breed.
A list of 5 Quiet Dog Breeds for your Apartment or Home
1. Great Dane
First on our list is the Great Dane, this guy is one of the kings in the dog world often known as a gentle giant. This is a perfect apartment dog for anyone wanting a quiet dog breed but at the same time a large breed as well. The Great Dane is a very calm dog breed that is perfect for apartment life, however he will benefit greatly from a daily walk. Great Danes are also great with children, the picture below speaks for itself.
2. Greyhounds
Having Greyhounds all my life I can safely say they are a breed to own if you are looking for quiet dogs. In a pack of 50 Greyhounds, you will not even hear one bark. Instead of buying a puppy you should adopt one as they make one of the best family dogs. They do need daily exercise however the athletic figure doesn’t come easy. They do not get along very well with cats so it something to keep in mind if you own felines. “As you can see we get along with kids too!”
3. Newfoundland
Weighing in about 150 pounds, the Newfoundland is an over sized lap dog, “at least we think we are”. They are one of the top dogs that don’t bark often. Did you know that our names are associated with a province in Canada called “Newfoundland and Labrador”? The Newfoundland can live up to 10 years or more if well cared for. They are very gentle and easily trainable and makes the perfect companion for whoever is looking for large breed apartment dogs. They also get along with other animals in the household. The good news is that you shouldn’t bath them often which can damage the natural oils in their skin, instead use dry shampoo. This is good because bathing a large dog like this in an apartment can get messy.
4. Whippet
Do you want a medium sized dog breed that is also quiet then the Whippet is the perfect dog for you. They are descendants of the Greyhound and they also have some of the Greyhound qualities in them such as their quietness. Whippet’s can live for 15 years and they are very friendly with people. They are a docile breed that is sensitive to harsh training, use plenty of positive reinforcement. They are easy to care for and odor free unlike most dogs, which makes them an ideal apartment dog for those people with sensitive noses. In a Whippet’s own words “we don’t stink.” Just like their cousins they can also run very fast and requires daily exercise.
5. Shih Tzu
I find that a Shih Tzu is very popular breed especially among Americans. Their small size and quiet personality makes them an ideal apartment dog as well. They are known as a toy breed weighing only 16 pounds at their maximum potential. Most Shih Tzu’s can live up to 15 years or slightly more if well cared for. These little guys really make an impression on people with their happy personalities. They are alert, gentle and very affectionate with their human pack. The good thing is that they do not need a big yard and will lead happy lives in an apartment setting. They require grooming unlike the other dogs on the list and may be harder to housebreak.
There are a few other quiet dog breeds that I haven’t mentioned in this article and they include the Great Pyrenees, Mastiff, Bernese Mountain Dog, Saint Bernard and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. If I come across any other dog breeds that makes this list I will be adding on to it in the future. Thank you for reading, I hope this article helped you in picking out quiet dog breeds for your home or apartment.
